Avenue A

Dusty eyed daughters
pale skinned and blinding
minding the store at midnight
hiding in the cracks and bumps
dizzy, needy, full of promise
picking their way through
turf checkered with glass and cigs
on avenue a

And I'm on my way
Four tires and a dream
follow the rusty signs up
I'm here for the tainted dance
here for the greasy neon
for the clandestine
the salvation
collapse

Night flows here
down into drains like wishes
Glitter woven into the sky
I'm in it for the glistening queen
in it for the blank stare
for the nicotine taste
the reflection
home

Shim-sham phonies graze inside
bombed out doorsteps and alleyways
Fat black passages into some other time
I do it for the bleeding dark
do it for the hooded curse
for the mother's lap
the execution
now

Just like that I'm up and out
glazed and shaking
seeing once, twice the grey willows
blooming in spite
the wind at my back as I speed
leaving rocket trails
next to the ramshackle wonders
of avenue a

Captured inside quiet whitewashed walls
down the block with an outline of
white picket, wrought iron
I need it for the blossoming shake
need it for the last chance
for the fading echoes
the hours
gone

Woes and wails the sirens beat
molten hands blessed with fire drip along
pock-marked sidewalks like seeded fields
I want it for the painted face
want it for the thumping heart
for the giver's grace
the collection
time

Up from the tumbling depths I reach
the end of it all entering rooms where
windows fling open to catch the moldy morning haze
I crave it for the parched soul
crave it for the billowing scream
for the wicked cold
the revelation
here

Orange blaze tinkers on the edge
of the world my flimsy clouds titter and fall
However steeled against the dread
knowing again and again I'll come
back to these murdered lights
casting shadows on the skeletons
that shamble up and back
on avenue a

House Fun

So we got the final contract price for the house from the builder and might I say "HOLY CRAP!" How this midsized project turned into the next Sears Tower is beyond me. These things gather steam until all steam has been exhaused and you're left picking up tattered pieces of
'We didn't ask for's and 'that's probably not necessary's and on and on.

So we got the price to our lender, who after asking several times if we were joking, finally got to work on how we were going to pay for it. As we left I looked back toward the building and saw green and orange smoke coming out of her office, so I'm at least a little encouraged.

Before any of this can move forward though we have the matter of some trees that need to be dealt with (read: ripped up and carried away). Since sitting in front of a keyboard and routing bits around a network are really the extent of my tree-pulling expertise, I figured I'd better enlist some help. I called the good old folks over and J&W Tree service to do the dirty work.

Turns out though that they are big gurly men, and won't touch the tree since it happens to have a large live power line running right through it. Even after repeated attempts to convince them they probably wouldn't die, and that even if they did life ain't so great anyway if your job is pulling trees out of the ground, they demurred.

So I sit and wait for the power company to come and do something, anything about the lines other that park the truck, get out, say, "Yep, gotta move those lines. (Insert name here) needs to come out and see what it's going to take to do this. You free for several months to meet us out here anytime?" But of course, I say. I have no life.

Here's a pic of the offending sapling
